Almost Tomato Time!Written by Laura Haselhuhn April 15th is the date to plant out pepper and tomato transplants into the hoophouses. Transplants should be about 6-8 weeks old when they are transplanted out. Since this weather is a bit unpredictable, have your interior row cover set up in case the temperature dips in the days ahead. Suggested spacing for tomatoes: -Suggested in row spacing for tomatoes is: 2' -Suggested between row spacing for tomatoes is: 3' wide beds can fit one row of tomatoes, 4' wide beds can fit 2 rows of tomatoes, just stagger the rows. Some farmers use 3' wide beds for winter production and in summer they switch to a 4' wide bed to maximize the space.
A quick look at estimated yield: On the low end you can expect 10lbs per plant, however the average amount you could expect to see is 15-18 lbs per plant. Stay tuned for another post on pruning & stringing tomatoes, and staking peppers!
